Masters of Modern Dance


Join us for a unique program with four masters in modern dance and one master of neo-classic ballet. Take one lesson or all eleven!  The price is right (see below).  The location is beautiful, and the classes are challenging. 

Enjoy class in a different space with a different mix of talent to discover a difference in yourself. 

Try a new teacher or catch up with a favorite mentor. James Reardon of  Boston Dance Company, Mariah Steele of  Quicksilver Dance Company, Kathy Hassinger of  Dance Currents,  Betsi Graves Akerstein of Urbanity Dance Project, and Lorraine Chapman of the Chapman the Company will each guest teach at the Dancing Arts Center during the weeks of May 17 - June 8th.  Modern classes are scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-7:00PM. Ballet classes are scheduled for Friday, June 3rd and 10th from 3:45-5:15PM. 

Observing class is only $5.00 each.  Taking individual classes are $11.00 each; a five class card is $50.00 Take eight classes for $75.00.  Take 10 classes for $90.00 and get a bonus class (Tues, May 31st 3:45-5:15) for FREE!

James Reardon

will lead two ballet classes on June 3rd and 10th from 3:45-5:15.  'Jimmy's' classes are delightful with innovative combinations and musicality.
He is a native Bostonian whom most people will remember for his outstanding soloist career with the Boston Ballet under the direction of E. Virginia Williams and Violette Verdy. James founded the Boston Dance Company in 1992 with Clyde Nantais. 

  
Kathy Hassinger  

Kathy Hassinger

will lead three classes teaching a collection of historical dances by famous choreographers  on May 31st 3:45-5:15 and 5:30-7:00P, and June 2nd 5:30-7:00PM  Take one or all three!  Hassinger is working on a film of famous modern dances, which will highlight their living legacy. She is artistic director of Dance Currents, Inc., and teaches Perspectives in World Dance at Emerson college, and ballet for Jose Mateo Ballet Theater. 

  
Mariah Steele   

Mariah Steele

will teach two modern classes exploring the use of weight in partnering on May 17th and 26th from 5:30-7:00PM.  She now dances for Sokolow Now!, the Anna Sokolow archival company and Rebecca Rice Dance. In addition to running Quicksilver Dance, Mariah is in the process of earning a Masters Degree at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, where she is studying non-profit management and conflict resolution. Her goal is to bring these new skills to Quicksilver Dance upon graduation.  For more information about Mariah's dance background, please read this interview.

   
Betsi Graves   

Betsi Graves

will teach two modern classes on May 19th and 24th from 5:30-7:00PM.  She combines Limon, Graham, Taylor and Naharin's Gaga technique with her own style.  She is the artistic founder/director of Urbanity Dance. At the age of 17, she was selected by Mia Michaels to tour across the U.S. on full scholarship with LA Undergound. She has taught at Harvard University, Boston College, and is currently on faculty at Boston Ballet School.  She dances for Karen Murphy-Fitch's Falling Flight Project.  In 2008 danced as a street performer for Theatre Mama and Cirque du Soleil's Kooza. Projects include: Contemporary Theatre of Boston's A Midsummer Night's Dream (June, 2010) and Urbanity Dance's The Story of Stuff(November, 2010).  Get more dirt on Betsi.  

   
Lorraine Chapman   

Lorraine Chapman

will lead two modern classes on June 7th and 9th from 5:30-7:00PM. 

She and her company are practically an institution in Boston's modern dance landscape.  Lorraine has quite a following, so if you have never taken a class with her, here is your chance to join the fan club.
